Same $20/mo sticker price (Claude Pro is $17/mo if you pay annually). Neither vendor publishes a chat message cap.
Pick ChatGPT Plus if you want a coding allowance you can actually plan around: OpenAI publishes Codex estimates per 5 hours (for example GPT-6 Luna 350-3,000 local messages), across web, CLI, IDE and iOS.
Pick Claude Pro if you work with long documents or big codebases: context goes up to 1M tokens (varies by model) vs 256K on Plus's reasoning model, and Claude Code is included. The catch: Claude Code shares one pool with chat, and Anthropic only says "at least 5x Free" per 5-hour session, plus weekly limits.
